Anointed One
Hebrew: mishchah
Greek: chrisma

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. - Luke 4:18-19

He Was Anointed to Anoint
The Old Testament provides us a unique understanding of "anointing" in word pictures.

Psalms 133:2 - Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;

The anointing of a priest or king was a big thing. It wasn't "a little dab will do ya" as practiced in today's church when anointing the sick. It was a literal inundation with the oil, a baptism in olive oil that not only left an impression on the mind but also the senses.

It was an earthly representation of what God initiated in heaven. Anointing was the earthly visible sign of what God had done to that person in the spiritual realm. When God anoints someone it first takes place in heaven before the throne of God. It is a matter sealed in heaven. God baptizes that person with his presence and blessing so that that 'presence" of Shekinah glory remains on him as a sweet smelling fragrance throughout his lifetime. Jesus was anointed KING OF HEAVEN. He is THE ANOINTED ONE. In Hebrew the Jews referred to that anointing as THE MESSIAH, the anointed one.

Consider the greatness of that anointing upon Jesus. It was without measure, that is good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over.

Jesus was anointed like no other. He was anointed to accomplish the mission the Father had given to him in Isaiah 61:1-3. His anointing was so that he could anoint others with the same "Charisma" that he had. He wants to spread his anointing oil all all his people. That is why the Holy Spirit was "poured out." It was a SEAL of his presence and blessing. It was the SIGN that God is with us.

Isaiah 61:1-3 - The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

As you enter this coming year consider adopting this wonderful name of Jesus as the name of the Lord for you during this New Year. His desire is to be the Anointed One and to be the Anointer of you and your life…

-- to proclaim good news to your heart and mind,
-- to heal your broken heart,
-- to set you free from bondage,
-- to proclaim victory, to give you beauty for ashes,
-- to give you the oil of joy for mourning,
-- to exchange your heavy spirit for a garment of praise,

so that you can be TREEES OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, the planning of the Lord that he might be glorified!

Oh, how he longs to bless you with his anointing! Just ask for it.

Use in Scripture
Anointing can be lost. Read the story of Saul who was anointed king but through disobedience he forfeited the blessing and anointing.

  • 1 Samuel 10:1 Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?
  • 1 Samuel 15:11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.
  • 1 Samuel 15:17 And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel?

Questions to Discuss
Look at Isaiah 61:1-3 and Luke 4:1-3 and compare these using several translations. Now list the purposes of the Anointed One.

  1. 1. Have you received the anointing from the Anointed One?
  2. 2. Have you received the fullness of the Spirit's anointing?
  3. 3. What gifts evidenced in your life confirm this anointing?
