If you sit at the feet of no one, you will probably have no one sitting at your feet.
Many years ago (35 years ago) I began my ministry without a coach.
I soon discovered I desperately needed one. I visited a few pastors who I highly esteemed
and asked them questions. They were not deliberately mentoring me but I watched them.
I listened to them. I mimicked their disciplines. It gave me a starting place.
Over the years I moved to other places and other men became my unsuspecting mentors.
I studied them. I asked them questions about personal disciplines. I asked them to share with
me their private and very personal spiritual disciplines. Some did. Others confessed they had
none to articulate. That made me sad. Yes, you can be successful without spiritual disciplines.
You can bootstrap yourself into the annal of successful pastorships, but you will not be in
God's list of heros. I want to be on God's honor roll, not man's.
Important Books on Prayer
Years ago I began to sit at the feet of great men of God. I did that through reading the legacies they left behind: Their books.
I have chosen to be a God chaser. I hunger after him and if I find someone else who reflects that hunger I want to
sit at their feet and learn. About 20 years ago I began to deliberately compile and devour all the great books on prayer
I could find. I've sat at the feet of masters like Brother Lawrence, George Mueller, Reece Howell, Andrew Murray, and .
More recently I sit under men like John Piper, Wesley Duewel, Jim Cymbala, and Tommy Tenny. They are my mentors.
Books are your mentors. THey are a rich legacy of men's lives and disciplines, and contain the secret of their successes.
Read for your own sake, or "read for heaven's sake," but read!
